Casio is a brand of electronic digital clocks and watches. The company was founded in 1887 by Genichi Kawakami as the Kowa Watch Company, which at that time mainly produced ground slate pencils. In 1982 Casio bought the company from the founder's grandson, Shigeishi Kawakami, who unfortunately died just two years later from diabetes-related complications. In 1984 Casio took on a new name: Casio Computer Co., Ltd., and began producing electronic calculators using calculator technology developed by Jean-Luc Gaudin. Casio pioneered many features of modern cell phones including calculator functions and an LCD screen with a graphical interface to make navigation easier during text entry phases of phone calls or texts). In 1986 Casio entered the digital watch (watch with a digital display) market with the launch of its popular 9-digit calculator watch, the fx-991. It was originally designed as an office watch to be used during busy work days. It was the first fully functional calculator that could be worn on an individual's wrist. The fx-991 used a 0.98″ screen and weighed 2.6 oz (70 g). The built-in calculator could perform basic math functions, such as calculating area and circumference, adding and subtracting common fractions, percentages, square roots, and storing data in memory locations marked '100' (10 digits). Casio soon followed with several additional models of the calculator watch, each offering further added functionality. The fx-991 had an infrared interface that could be used to send and receive data to/from other electronic devices (such as desktop calculators), making it an early practical example of the use of Bluetooth technology. In 1989, Casio introduced its first digital hand-held calculator–the fx-8500GX. It was first produced in Japan and had only three buttons; power on/off, up/down (to show numbers), and print (for entering data). It featured an LCD screen which displayed eight numbers along with two symbols for input operations. Casio produced the fx-8500GX for several years under the name of Edifice. The company then introduced its next generation calculator watch, the fx-85GT, in 1995. It had scientific and graphing capabilities which included 3.2×10 unique functions and 63 independent memories. This model was also capable of sending/receiving digital data via the infrared interface with other calculators or computers, similar to its predecessor. Casio soon released an updated version of this watch, the fx-85GT PLUS, which featured a solar panel to provide power from light sources rather than battery power from a battery charge unit. This watch contained a built-in speaker that allowed for low-volume, hands free messages to be dialed from another fx-85GT PLUS watch. This watch would go on to become a very popular item for Casio products and is still in current production as of 2010. In 1997, Casio introduced a new version of the fx-85GT with a metal body similar to the style of the later fx-9860. Later that year it was followed by the fx-991GX, which was more ergonomic and smaller than its predecessors. In 1998 Casio released its first GPS enabled calculator watch, the fx-991PX. cfa1e77820
